Reflections on My First Month at Aurora Financial Strategies

As I complete my first month as a summer intern at Aurora Financial Strategies, I have had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and learn more about the financial planning industry.

Going into the internship, I knew financial planning involved helping clients pursue their financial goals, but I have quickly learned that there is much more to it than simply selecting investments.

One of the most valuable experiences so far has been sitting in client meetings and observing how advisors Billy Cardwell and Chad Gifford interact with clients. Watching their meeting flow has shown me the importance of listening, asking thoughtful questions, and understanding each client’s unique goals and circumstances.

I have learned that effective financial planning begins with understanding the person behind the portfolio.

In addition to attending meetings, I have assisted with processing paperwork through Charles Schwab for new account openings and using BlackRock software to prepare portfolio reports. These responsibilities have given me a greater appreciation for the work that happens behind the scenes to deliver quality service to clients.

I have also had the opportunity to learn from Reed Hubbert, whose insights have helped me better understand that financial planning is not just about investments, but about creating strategies that align with a client’s long-term goals and life circumstances.

One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that financial planning is far more comprehensive than simply picking stocks. Understanding a client’s goals, risk tolerance, and overall financial situation is just as important as investment selection.

At the same time, I have gained a deeper appreciation for the work that goes into investment management. Aurora’s Chief Investment Officer, Austin Crites, dedicates significant time to researching companies, analyzing market trends, and evaluating investment opportunities. Seeing the level of discipline and preparation involved has reinforced how important thoughtful investment management is within the broader financial planning process.

What has surprised me most is how collaborative the Aurora team is. Before starting my internship, I expected advisors to handle most aspects of the planning process independently. Instead, I have seen how different members of the team work together to create and maintain financial plans for clients.

From preparing reports and processing paperwork to meeting with clients and developing recommendations, everyone plays an important role in delivering a positive client experience. Watching the advisors collaborate with Austin on the investment side has shown me how strong financial planning and disciplined investment management work hand in hand.

I chose Aurora Financial Strategies because of my connection with Chad Gifford and Billy Cardwell, as well as the positive experiences family and friends have shared about the firm. After spending my first month here, I can see why Aurora has earned such a strong reputation.

The commitment to client service, teamwork, and financial planning excellence is evident every day.

I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from such an experienced team and look forward to continuing to expand my knowledge throughout the remainder of the summer.
